LAST BLOG Prompt (August 21)

Thank you to all of you who have been contributing to our on line discussion of the book.  My final reflection of Drive is mixed.  There are some parts that I connected with and enjoyed.  There were also parts with which I had a tough time connecting.  The toolkit was also a mixed experience.  I enjoyed a few parts, but I could not tolerate other parts.  I saw Andrew and Kristin last week and said that there were parts of the toolkit I could not even make myself read including, "Thirteen Ways to Improve Your Company, Office, or Group."  Overall, I am glad we read it; I don't think it was the best book we have read.  My take away from the book is about intrinsic motivation and how important it is to tap into that.

For your final entry, please leave the best "TAKE AWAY" that you have from the book.


I will be sending out a time sheet on August 30 or 31 to people who blogged.  I ordered 20 books and 20 books  were taken.  We did not have 20 people blog.  So, only people who have blogged will be getting the time sheet.

Since Pink is categorizing Type I Behavior as being dependent upon three elements I wanted to really reflect on these elements to see if they are the nutrients that nurture my motivation.   According to Pink autonomy, mastery, and purpose are the essentials.  Passion and true motivation lives within me when there is a true purpose in the work I'm doing and I'm driven by a moral obligation that will benefit the masses.  I have to believe in the purpose of the work in order to be intrinsically motivated first and foremost.  Once I'm connected to do the work in a moral sense I automatically engage in brainstorming solutions to try and reach some type of "mastery".  In essence, I do believe that I require all three elements in order to be intrinsically motivated.  When each of you reflect on what motivates you, do you require all three elements?  Do you need more or less of one?

WEEK of AUG 5 POST (a bit early) 2/3 of Book Complete

I replied to a lot of people.  I have many people who are still not blogging.  I suppose I can send an email to encourage participation.  It is the only way I have a record of anyone's time too, since we are not having a meeting.
Anyways, I was hopeful that my dear friend Tresel Vick would blog with us, especially when the math graph came up around page 120 or so.  I am not a great math mind; however, what I was able to take away from that section is that mastery is not really ever completely and totally reachable.  This will blow some individuals' minds.  This will really bother some people.  I, however, get that and understand it.  I do not think it makes me any less motivated to try my best and continue to improve.
Remember a blog is supposed to be analogous to an online conversation.  I am requesting that you either create a new post or you respond to someone's post.  I hope you are enjoying the end of July.........

July 21, 2017 Part I Drive

I am going to take a few of the sections of text that made me really think, and put them out to all of you for your consideration.


"Indeed, most scandals and misbehavior that have seemed endemic to modern life involve shortcuts."


As a society we are a quick fix and get 'er done fast group.  I believe that there are many things in life that are tough, challenging and simply put require a lot of work.  I equate this to the instruction of writing.  Students and some teachers look for a quick way to get students to write the answer.  There is nothing quick about writing, even for the best writers.  Writing requires thinking and getting those ideas out; it requires looking at what you have written and seeing whether or not it will communicate to your audience effectively.  I think with school and education we try to make things easier (mostly because we care about kids) and sometimes (or more often in life) things are not easy.


"Rewards, by their very nature, narrow our focus.  That's helpful when there's a clear path to a solution.  They help us stare ahead and race faster."


I included this section from page 42 simply because it makes me think about what it does to creativity.  There was a great deal in this section that spoke to creativity and how it can be halted with extrinsic rewards. 


"Instead, give people meaningful information about their work.  The more feedback focuses on specifics (great use of color) -- and the more the praise is about effort and strategy rather than about achieving a particular outcome-- the more effective it can be."

I read Carol Dweck and GROWTH MINDSET all over this one.......................
